“Tomorrow night is the night…” Zoe crowed as she sipped at the mug of coffee in front of her.

“What night?” Daisy bit while everyone else stayed silent.

“The winter Solstice.”

“The longest night.” Daisy knew that one.

“Yule.” Zoe offered and Daisy frowned.

“That’s Christmas…”

“No. They stole it from us.” Zoe informed her. “Tomorrow is Yule and we have a few things to do.”

“Like?” Daisy asked.

“Get a Yule log. Mistletoe. Evergreens. A nice large candle…” Zoe started to rhyme off the tasks on her fingers.

“Don’t you have any stock left from the shop?” Daisy asked hopefully. Zoe had sold her shop to another witch, lock, stock and barrel. She’d kept just a few things for her own personal use.

“Maybe the candle.” Zoe shrugged.

“Pah. Witch stuff is bad news.” Bertha grunted from the table behind Zoe and the witch rolled her eyes.

“Well where are we going to get the rest?” Daisy asked quickly. She didn’t want Zoe butting heads with Bertha.

“Forage for it.” Zoe grinned with a twinkle in her eyes.

Daisy frowned. She wasn’t too keen on the outdoors, especially when it was getting colder than a freezer out there. Foraging sounded like cold work to her.

“You can’t.” Anita offered from her perch at the other end of the counter top.

“Can’t.” Daisy shrugged. Feeling decidedly glad that the newest member of the pack had cut that idea stone cold dead.

“And why would that be?” Zoe shot back.

“Because the vampire is on the loose out there somewhere. Your mates would never allow it.” Anita smiled sweetly as Zoe frowned.

“Damn.” Zoe was deep in thought.

“Maybe next year…” Daisy offered. Happy with her lot now that she didn’t have to venture out into the coldness.

“Maybe we don’t have to tell them.” Zoe said.

“Pah! I’m sure I’m not invisible, and I’m sitting right here.” Bertha growled out, bringing all of their attention back towards her. “I’m not letting you three go out there alone…”

“I wasn’t going anyway.” Anita shrugged just one shoulder.

“Take Cole.” Bertha eyed the newest witch. “Some people seem to think he’s expendable.” She sniped.

“I don’t think he’s expendable.” Anita hotly denied.

“Well, you ain’t got no plans to mate with him. That’s a death sentence in itself. What’s that if it ain’t expendable?” Bertha snorted her contempt and Anita fumed within.

“I…” Anita bit off her words but she couldn’t turn off the annoyance inside of her. It was fuelled by the pang of guilt that had been slowly eating away at her since she’d made her feelings plain.

“He doesn’t want to mate with me anyhow.” Anita snapped out.

“Says you.” Bertha shot back.

“Says him. Maybe you should turn up your hearing aid…”

“Maybe you should lose the attitude young lady and understand that your choices have consequences. Not just for you or for Cole, but for the pack if Cole needs to be put down like a damn mutt because he’s gone rogue.” Bertha saw the shock register on Anita’s face and a flush of guilt went through her.

It was short lived. If she could knock some sense into these young folk and save Cole’s life- Then she’d do it again and again.
